Should You Dye a Synthetic Hair Wig?

Yes, it is possible to dye synthetic hair wigs, as it is possible to dye cloth, fabric, and other common things in the house. Dying a synthetic wig has to be done slowly, precisely, and with utmost care as dying the wig can damage it if it case being done by an inexperienced person. A person who does not have an interest in hair grooming is also likely to pay the least attention to the synthetic hair wig dying and may also damage the wig.

3 Simple Steps to Dye a Synthetic Wig

These are the simple steps to dye a synthetic wig:-

Step 1: Preparing the Dye

Take a spray bottle and mix an equal ratio of nearly 1:1 proportion of alcohol-based ink and water in the bottle. The alcohol-based ink can be purchased from the nearby grocery store and also a light brown color if you want to dye your wig with this color. The ink bottle contents are emptied into a spray bottle. Now equal amounts of water are added to the spray bottle, screw the top of a bottle and shake the contents so as to form a uniform mixture.

Step 2: Applying the Dye

1) The first thing is to obtain a light-colored synthetic wig, such as silver, white, or light blonde. In this way, you can start with a free mind which will permit you to dye the wig, the color of your choice.

2) Pick a suitable location outside which is free and open. Place a table in a suitable location and now cover the table with a newspaper or an old tablecloth. Now put the wig on a wig stand over the table.

3) Wear suitable gloves on your hands and an old dress in case the dye gets spilled, so you will not have to worry about the old clothes.

4) Now start by dyeing the top layer of hair which is visible when the wig is split naturally. The spray bottle is taken and the dye is sprayed 3-4 times in a selective area to coat one section which is 2-3 inches (5.1 cm to 7.6 cm) wide. Run your fingers deep inside the root area and move the fingers firmly from one side to another as your fingers go down through the hair. Run your hands slowly to see that the dye is completely coated on the wig.

5) This process is repeated for other sections of hair. Once you have applied dye to one section, create one more section next to it, which is similar in size, i.e., 2-3 inches (5.1 cm to 7.6 cm) wide, spray the dye on this section, and work your hands on the section. Continue to work around the head and make sure to spray near the roots and upper half of the hair stands. Make sure that you start from the top and go deep to the base of the wig. This will ensure that all parts of the wig are covered with the color.

6) Next is to comb the wig, to make the hair look uniform. Once all the section of hair is dyed and spread out as much as possible with the hands, the hair still may be untidy. To give it a uniform touch you can use a wide-tooth comb, to comb the hair from roots to the tip of hair, all the way around the head.

Step 3: Cleaning and Styling the Wig

1) After the wig is ready, the next step is to dry it. The wig is placed in the open sun to let it completely dry. This may take an hour or more depending on the sunshine and length of the wig.

Now the wig has to be given a swift wash. Cold water is preferred as warm water may wash off the color of the dye.

2) After the wig is dried, take it to a sink and turn on the water. Rinse the wig with water until the water in the sink is totally clear and free from any ink color. Make sure to see that the color of the dye is not washed, if so then you can re-dye to achieve the color once again.

3) The wig can be sprayed with a synthetic hair conditioner which will be available in your nearby beauty store. Take a wide-tooth comb and comb the hair from the roots to the tips of the hair so that the complete wig is detangled.

Avoid the use of a regular hair brush on the synthetic wig as it may damage the wig.

4) Use a blower to dry the wig. The lowest heat setting on the dryer should be set to blow the wig dry. Straighteners and curling irons can be set to temperatures no more than about 200-250 °F (93-121 °C).

Now the synthetic wig is ready for use.

Conclusion

A synthetic wig can be tried out especially if you are bored with the regular hairstyle and want to dress up as a person with colorful hair.

Although dyeing a synthetic wig may seem to be a cumbersome task, the right set of tools and a keen interest in a new hair look can make it fun and it can be doable.
